The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) in collaboration with Albarka 89.9 FM, Ganmo, Kwara State on Wednesday organised a one-day media round table on ‘Media law & ethics concept, principles and practices and fact-checking as a tool for investigative journalism,’ ‘Its impact on good governance and accountability’ with participants drawn from media organizations and practitioners across Kwara state.
The enlightenment programme funded by the MacArthur Foundation was held at City-In-Hotel, G.R.A Ilorin, with media executives and journalists from conventional and new media in attendance.
The duo of Bushrah Yusuf- Badmus, Principal Correspondent at News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and Zainab Sanni of News Verifier, spoke on media law and ethics Concepts, principles and practices and fact-checking as a tool for investigative journalism respectively.
In her paper, Bushra urged participants to always abide by the rules and ethics of journalism in discharging their daily activities, said: “As professional media practitioners, we have to be always circumspect in our reportage and most importantly on any investigative reporting because people are always looking forward to us to feed them with happening in our environment daily, and this has to be accurate and unmalicious.”
Also in her lecture, Zainab put participants through fact-checking and tools to be deployed to ensure information and images are not misrepresented in their reporting.
Participants were also given time to ask questions and make contributions.
