Lagos state University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH ) Association of Campus Journalists had been charged to prioritise professionalism over commercialism. While Journalism business must be sustainable in this period, over commercialisation of news items will not deliver great dividends. Knowing how to ensure balance is now an art and act professionals must master.

Being a Science and technology university, we expect that journalists raised from this place should know how to simplify science and technology stories for their audience. In many cases, science and technology stories can be so dry, full of jargon so much that news consumers may not be able to connect with the stories eventually. The age we are now, journalists trained in science and technology universities have the task of being better than the previous generation.

Above and many other issues were raised last Wednesday 13th of March, 2024 at a journalism workshop organised by Africa Foundation for Young Media Professionals (AFYMP) for Association of Campus Journalists Lagos state university of Technology.

Training session at the Newsroom

Opening the session, the staff adviser of the department, encouraged the participants to pay attention and grab as much they can from the session. The workshop session was facilitated by Yinka Olaito, Executive Director of AFYMP

Among many other things, Yinka told the participants, there will be no overnight success if anyone wants to excel in the media profession. He also advised, you may not be the best now, but if the passion, dedication and a desire to become the best is there, the sky will be the starting point. “As you make your decision to excel in the media profession, never expect overnight success. Many who stood out today had invested a minimum of 10-15 years of hard and smart work” Yinka Olaito encouraged.
